What is VPN?

Definition

A Virtual Private Network (VPN) creates an encrypted tunnel between devices over the public internet, allowing them to communicate as if they were on the same private network. Modern mesh VPNs like Tailscale create direct, encrypted connections between devices without routing traffic through a central server.

Why It Matters

Engram uses VPN connectivity (via Tailscale) to provide secure access to your self-hosted instance without exposing any public endpoints. Only authenticated devices on your private network can reach Engram.
