What is 4-Database Architecture?

Definition

A 4-database architecture uses four specialized database technologies — each optimized for a different type of data operation — rather than forcing all data into a single general-purpose database. This allows each layer of the system to use the storage and query engine best suited to its needs.

Why It Matters

Engram uses a 4-database architecture: PostgreSQL for structured data, Neo4j for knowledge graphs, Qdrant for vector/semantic search, and Redis for caching and real-time state. Each database handles what it does best.
